Creative intelligence
P. Michael Jorgensen
B.F.A., M.F.A (Cand.)
What if a single campaign could not only capture attention but also change lives for the better?
As a creative director, strategic multi-media graphic designer, copywriter and educator with over 20 years of experience, I have made this my mission, and I bring this passionate goal with me to every project. From orchestrating a multi-media campaign to reduce smoking rates in downtown Vancouver to mentoring aspiring creative producers and marketers, my journey as a Creative Director has been driven by a passion for impactful storytelling and strategic design which improves the lives of those receiving it.
In a world where creativity meets strategy, I thrive on transforming complex marketing challenges into compelling narratives that resonate with audiences and drive measurable results. Leading a health initiative that achieved an 86% level of awareness and equally high levels of support and genuine appreciation, along with one of the highest levels of smoking cessation and reduction ever reported to Health Canada, this campaign taught me the power of employing my creative and emotional intelligence to design.
A cornerstone of my career was leading a six-month, multi-media integrated smoking cessation campaign in downtown Vancouver, funded by Health Canada and the Vancouver Greater Regional District. This project involved orchestrating a team of 75 professionals, including public relations experts, a copywriter, a health researcher and social media influencers.
Managing this complex campaign required my skills in strategic direction and project management as I collaborated with two committees of 30 members in total to gain approval for every public-facing piece. The campaign's scope included print and online advertising, a website, contests, media releases, billboards, transit ads and posters. I also worked closely with a post-campaign marketing research company to measure effectiveness.
When teaching hundreds of ambitious marketing communications students each semester as I have at British Columbia Institute of Technology in Burnaby and Vancouver, my skill of leading multiple teams as a creative director expanded exponentially. Mentoring students through their term projects—which involve designing integrated creative and marketing campaigns across diverse media platforms for actual companies and presenting them to real owners, CEOs, and managers—directly reflects the leadership and communication skills essential for inspiring and directing creative teams in professional settings. This hands-on experience cultivates a dynamic learning environment for both teacher and students that bridges academic theory with real-world application, fostering growth for everyone involved.
This experience enabled me to handle multiple projects simultaneously, explain complex design and marketing concepts to those new to them, provide constructive feedback on creative and marketing strategies, identify where improvements were needed to fulfill objectives, and make changes to increase campaign integration across media.
I am adept at strategizing and executing digital marketing campaigns and thrive in environments where creativity and productivity intersect. My interdisciplinary approach and passion for innovative solutions make me an excellent fit for many companies. I am eager to bring my expertise to your team and contribute to your continued success.
Creatively yours,
P. Michael Jorgensen

Creative challenges
I derive great satisfaction from using my deep-diving research skills and creativity to communicate ideas with strength, impact and remain memorable.
After ten years of post-secondary education I have learned to meticulously research and explore every facet of a project. This rigorous process leads to a creative approach that emphasizes the central message of the campaign.
The central theme brings together the diversity of ideas and harmonizes them into a unified concept. Clear and consistent communication results, and captures the audience's interest, desires and needs, resonating with them. Clarity and focus on a singular theme significantly enhance the likelihood of success.
Understanding the target audience is paramount. Through in-depth analysis of relevant market research, attentive listening, and strategic questioning, I delve into the historical and present narratives of the audience. I wish to grasp their challenges and aspirations, and tailor my creative output to express it.
Utilizing both symbolic and verbal language, I aim to establish a mutually beneficial relationship with my audience. This symbiosis enhances engagement and fosters a deeper connection with the message being conveyed.
Creative intelligence
Creative Intelligence is one of three intelligence types developed by Robert Sternbergas as part of his "Triarchic Theory of Intelligence." Creative intelligence is a valuable characteristic in those who have it, because it:
➤ enhances curiosity, learning and expertise in different domains.
➤ innovates solutions to problems that may be hard for others to solve.
➤ invents solutions that are not yet available in the market.
➤ enjoys challenges and developing new skills.
➤ imagines innovative solutions
➤ it is receptive to diverse ideas
➤ discovers new connections between them.
Co-creative approach
I co-create marketing communications campaigns for products and services by listening carefully to all stakeholders.
By listening, I identify the challenges and opportunities experienced by everyone in the process, including those involved in the design, manufacture, marketing, purchase, delivery and use of the product or service.
By solving the challenges and capitalizing on the opportunities discovered in a co-creative process, creative marketing efforts increase profits.
Entrepreneurial employee
I am an entrepreneur. I founded Jorgensen Designs in 1998. My second business, Body Mind Soul Studio, was founded in 2008. I supported myself with these companies, while also taking on employment with other companies to expand my skills and provide mentorship.
Entrepreneurial employees are said to be "driven, passionate, smart and innovative." I encourage employers, employees and other stakeholders to do their best work. When I believe in a company's mission, I am motivated to see it succeed.
I agree with this researcher, who writes: "The secret of an entrepreneurial employee's ability to accomplish so much is to take responsibility for his successes and failures by objectively evaluating his performance and constantly improving his knowledge."
As an entrepreneurial employee, I choose employers whose goals align with my own. Work ceases to be a chore: It is an empowered choice of altruism and self-actualization.
Inspire & build supportive communities
In my roles as a:
➤ New media artist
➤ Art gallery exhibitor
➤ Art Gallery Director and Curator
➤ Associate Professor of Fine Art
➤ Course Designer
➤ Marketing Communications Instructor
➤ Educational Technology Designer
➤ Holistic health and wellness therapist and writer
I motivate others to do their best work. I recognize everyone's contribution to a project. I motivate by recognizing people's talents and skills. I coach people to realize their potential. I create a supportive environment in which each person's contribution is valued and is recognized.
Scott Helman's music video employs a creative theme that teens and young adults find immediately relatable. The surreal visual style suggests a hallucination or dream/nightmare, and exaggerates the feeling of being awkward and having "hang-ups." The visual surprise captures attention, and also imparts humour to an experience that is universally felt by youth as they make the transition to adults. ▼

Mute/Voice, Sandra Semchuk
Sandra Semchuk, one of my professors at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, is a Canadian photography-based artist. She captured a self-portrait each year, from her earliest years as a practicing artist. I produced and edited a video of her speaking about her work, "Mute/Voice," exhibited at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. Although it was the only self-portrait with audio, I think the silence of the photographic evidence still communicates. What do you think?
